Benefits for the future unemployed

Benefits for the future unemployedBenefits for the future unemployedStarting early last year, vehicle sales began a steady slide, and theyve shriveled even more violently in the wake of mass layoffs. So, now that theyre in dire straits, car companies are finally paying attention to what their customers need. (They were oblivious to the fact that gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs wouldnt really appeal to prospective buyers in times of bounding prices, but thats another story.) The not-seemingly-in-danger Hyundai was perhaps the first to offer a guarantee to consumers in early January its Assurance program lets buyers off the hook if theyre been laid off after making at least two scheduled lease/loan payments. (They can return the car and forget about up to $7,500 worth of future responsibilities.) Ford and General Motors got on board, and, hoping to shock consumers into purchases, constructed similar plans. Notably, this trend has spread outside the automotive world as guarantees of various sorts have been adopted by a number of other companies. According to SmartMoney magazine, your investment in anything from property rentals (Goldberg Companies, in several states) and suits (Jos. A. Bank) to flights and cruises (jetBlue, Norwegian Cruise Lines) may be covered under such a layoff protection plan. (Theres even a program that safeguards your au pair contract Au Pair in America is thinking about you too) But be sensible dont get lured into making risky purchases just because you seem to be operating with a safety net. And make sure to read the fine print. Posted by Todd Obolsky, Vault News & Commentary

I#8217;m Shy How Do I Succeed in My Career

I8217m Shy How Do I Succeed in My Career I8217m Shy How Do I Succeed in My Career History is full ofexamples of powerful, socially shy leaders. U.S. Presidents James Madison, Jimmy Carter, andRichard Nixon come to mind. The beloved American investor Warren Buffett is shy yet highly effective inbusiness and public life.In our work with leaders, we have found many effective schlussverkauf executives may spendtheir professional time meeting new people, but they consider it work. The Shyness ContinuumForty percentof the U.S. population defines itself as shy. In reality, shy is a behavioral continuum.Try this exerciseUsinga scale of 0 (leid shy) to 10 (antisocial), assign a number to how shy you think you are. After assigning yourself a number, approach three people who know you well. Ask them to assign a numberto you using the same scale. If the number you gave yourself is higher than the number assigned to you by people who know you, perhaps you are using a pattern of thought called gen eralization logic.Stanford University Professor Emeritus Philip Zimbardo conducted pioneering research on how shypeople think, and he foundthat many inappropriately use generalization logic while not usingenough situation-specific logic.(1)For example, in one experiment, causal attributions of shy students were compared with causal attributions of control studentsin ten different situations. Significant differences between the two groups emerged when they were asked to explain the outcomes of situations. (2) As it turns out,the higher one is on theshyness continuum, themore likely one is to explain things in terms of generalization logic. An Example of Generalization LogicTwo-year-old Jennifer goes with her mother to visit one of her mothers friends. Jennifer is huggingmothers skirts and avoiding eye contact with the friend. Mother says to her friend, Im sorry, butJennifer is shy.The mothers explanation is an example of generalization logic. It extrapolates behavior from one situatio n andthen predicts similar behavior in nearly all situations. On the higher end of theshyness scale say people who rank at 5+ peoples cognitive frameworks bias them to draw conclusions based on generalization logic. Sometimes, the generalization logic is useful. Sometimes, it is not.We binnensee it all the time in our practicewhen candidates make statements like, Im bad at networking or I cant do cold calling.Lets revisit the situation with Jennifer and her mother.Suppose her mother now says the followingIm sorry, but Jennifer tends to be shy when first meeting strangers. Im sure she will act differentlyonce she gets to know you.Notice that this logic focuses on situational context. It avoids generalization. It explicitly states that achange in conditions would change Jennifers behavior. The first explanation the one based on generalization logic offers no hope of change, but the second explanation focuses specifically on change.Effective leaders should be able to use both situati onal logic and generalization logic. But as you move up in the shyness continuum, your pattern of logic might be unbalanced in favor of generalization logic, and you may beunaware that your logic is unbalanced. This lack of awarenessmay bias your decisions in ways that harm your career and your organization. Overuse of Generalization Logic Can Be DangerousA recruiter calls a chief financial officer (CFO) about an opportunity that would require relocation fromBoston to Tulsa, Oklahoma. One CFO who is lower on the shyness continuum might employ situational logic in the following mannerThe job interview itself is worth my time, if only for interview practice. I am not interested inmoving to Tulsa. But who knows? Perhaps the firm will have an opportunity that is too good topass up. Ive never been to Tulsa. I should not judge it until I see it. I will never know unless I giveit a try. After all, it is only a job interview. My family might enjoy a change of scenery, or they mightnot. Lets cross that bridge if and when we need to cross it.A CFO who is 5+ on the shyness scale might have the following logic patternWhat happens if I get an offer? My spouse would never move to Tulsa. My children will be angryat me. I will alienate my children, and my spouse will divorce me. I will end up living alone in acheap motel in Tulsa. I will have all my meals at the local Burger King Is that any way to live?? Iwill not go to Tulsa for a job interview.Using Generalization Logic in Evaluating SubordinatesThis same type of generalization logic can also reduce your effectiveness in evaluating people who report toyou. For example, someone complains that an associate on your team welches rude to a customer. The 5+ shyanfhrer might have a cognitive bias about leaping to the conclusion that this subordinate is not a team player. The 5+ shy boss might discount the subordinates explanations about the unusual context of the situationas rationalizations.Someone with a logical framework based m ore in situational logic might be inclined not to take action until a pattern ofrudeness emerges. Generalization Logic Can Be of Value in ModerationGeneralized logic is a great skill to have because it assumes that lessons from one event are easilytransferred to other events. Attorneys use generalization logic when looking to apply case law. Physiciansuse generalization logic in applying findings from one patient to a new patient. As withany pattern of thought, however, effective leaders must bedeliberate about how often they employgeneralization logic. They must see the limitations of generalization logic. If you are on the 5+ side of the shyness continuum, generalization logic might be such a routine way oflooking at the world that you may inappropriately discount situational explanations. And that discounting couldlimit future growth opportunities for you.Join the Conversation Does Being Shy Make It Hard to Advance in Your Career? For example, you know that you need to develop a soc ial/professional network outside of your job situation.Life is uncertain, and you do not wish to be dependent upon your boss for your future income. You knowyou need to join a professional association and becomeknown as a player within your profession.Say you join anassociation and attend one cocktail party. The evening turns out to beunproductive and boring. YouconcludeThis association is a waste of time and money.Do you see the generalization logic employed here? A situational logic explanation might be that perhapsmeeting people at cocktail parties is not the best way for you to get known or get to know others. Perhapsyou might want to volunteer your time on a committee of the association. What Got You Here Wont Get You ThereThis is the title of a book on coaching by Marshall Goldsmith (3).The phrase encapsulatesthe basic challengefaced bymany of the people we work with in our practice They must unlearn the discipline and habits of thought that got them to their current level if t hey are to move to a new level. If your perspective is imbalanced between generalization logic and situational logic, find a third party to helpyou get into the habit of taking a more balanced approach. Consider asking your boss for coaching assistance. It is oneway that the company can demonstrate its commitment to you as part of its future. These days, asking fora coach is as much a sign of weakness as an adequate golfer seeking the help of a golfing coach to improveher putting.Another option is to look for career professionals who are certified by the nonprofit Institute ofCareerCertification International. You cant change your patterns of logic simply through good intentions alone. You need a certain amount of discipline to overcome ansicht bad behavioral habits. This article was adapted fromNavigating the Waterfall Your Job Search and Career Management Guide, produced byStybel, Peabody Associates, an Arbora Global Company.Sources1.Zimbardo, P. What Having an Absentee Boss Teaches You - The Muse

What Having an Absentee Boss Teaches You - The MuseWhat Having an Absentee Boss Teaches You Tzu siches nothing worse than a terrible boss. A person who seems to exist for the sole purpose of making your life miserable, the number one reason you dread Mondays, the only reason you experience anxiety on Sunday nights. A bad boss can be really harmful in fact, the likelihood that youll even stay in a job if you hate your manager is slim. And while crappy supervisors are the worst, right behind them are all the absentee managers of the workplace. Do you know what Im talking about? Its a manager who doesnt act like one, and not because hes too busy trying to be your BFF. This is someone who doesnt know how to lead, doesnt care to, or simply cant or wont make time for it. Canceled meetings, unanswered emails, zero feedback- the offenses range from annoying to stunting.Once upon a time, for a few brief months, I reported to such a person. Not only did it make feeling good about the work I we lches doing a real struggle, but it made it hard to see a future for myself at the company. If this person wasnt helping me learn, grow, understand my shortcomings and offer suggestions for improvement, and if she wasnt going to pay me any attention at all, how was I going to ever get recommended for a promotion, much less given more responsibilities? Sure, Ill concede that it was nice not being micromanaged and neat not having someone be watchful of my comings and goings, but that was about the only plus. True, I never worried about getting constructive criticism or negative feedback, but it wasnt the kind of role that merited an absentee boss- though what roles really do, I wonder.Fortunately, eager to be ever self-aware and turn anything into a learning experience that I can, my time without an active boss taught me a few things. If my boss didnt want to manage me, Id have to manage her- the fancy, workplace term for this is called managing up, and if done well, its super effecti ve. I grew comfortable following up on my follow-up emails, placing a handy and hard-to-miss URGENT (in all caps, yes) in the subject time when I really needed a response. If I bumped into her in the kitchen or in the hallway on the way to the elevator, I had no qualms about brushing aside her apologies for being so busy and hurriedly stating my case for what I needed. My emails became detailed accounts of what Id done, what I intended to do by a certain date, and what she could do for me before then. I never stopped doing my job in fact, I often had to make decisions on my own, but because I always made her aware of what was happening, I felt comfortable doing so.Above all, I learned what kind of leader I aspire to be. Its important for me to be respectful of others times, and so, on a basic level, that means keeping appointments and answering emails without having people follow up with me. I dont want to act like my time is more important or that anyones questions are a waste of m y time- my superiors or otherwise. Id rather know that I helped a colleague than inadvertently, with my lack of availability or attentiveness, held him back in any way. I also learned not to take a good boss for granted. This is an important lesson for you if youre questioning your career path, curiously examining the role youre in or the company you work for. If your relationship with your managers a solid one, thats not something you should take lightly. Continue to foster it. Do what you can to impress him and make him look good to his manager. Take notes on his leadership style and what it is about it that you appreciate. When its time for you to manage someone, youll have someone to emulate. On the flipside, if you despise your manager, examine exactly why that is. Is she really an awful leader and person, or are you just struggling to find a good way to work together productively? Is there anything you can do differently that might make her respond to you in a more favorable w ay? Do you get your work done in a timely manner and regularly go above and beyond what youre asked to do?For example, if your boss is a micromanager, there may be a way to turn that around to work for your advantage. Or, if she only ever has negative feedback, demonstrate that youre listening, absorbing it, and making attempts to respond to it. But, if you disagree with it completely, make a case for yourself. Theres something about being heard when the absentee boss alternative is being ignored. See? Bright sides and silver linings.Lastly, when you find yourself in a position to be a leader, take a close look at yourself and make absolutely certain that no one could ever accuse you of being absent- instead, aim to be the boss that your direct reports admire and aspire to be. Which Job Seekers Are Most Engaged Online

Which Job Seekers Are Most Engaged OnlineWhich Job Seekers Are Most Engaged OnlineFinding top talent in the uber-competitive job market isnt as easy as its cracked up to be. With a dearth of qualified candidates that are actively seeking employment opportunities, successful recruiters need to think outside the box to facilitate employment connections made in heaven. In days past, this may have been as easy as flooding every known channel with a simple job listing and invitation to call. Who has time for that, literally, anymore though? One of the threshold considerations to help streamline and maximize the impact of your job listing is identifying the platform and method of communication. Should you cold call or put a listing in the old classifieds? How about the internet? And which platforms should you focus on? Here we launch into considerations for those in the staffing business when it comes to job seekers and ansprechbar engagement.Consider the Target AudienceThe first step to de termining the correct method and platform for your initial search and the broad sweeping listing should be the field and experience level of the position youre hiring. As a general rule of thumb, we at Simply Hired see more introductory or lower specialty skill jobs filled zugnglich. In need of servers, retail clerks or intro level call center staffers? Resume hosting sites will definitely be the way to go. Many looking to start out careers in these positions arent knowledgeable of the recruiting process and will typically flock to online google searches. Ensure youre partnering with a top-notch resume and listing platform with high visibility (such as SimplyHired.com) and let these candidates come to you with keyword targeting.Different Jobs Need Different PlatformsIf youre staffing manager, executive or other positions requiring a higher level of experience, on the other hand, online may still be a great place to start but you may need to take stock of the platform. Professional c areers especially tend to flock to online professional networking sites when attempting to locate the job of their dreams.Recruiters working in the legal, medical, or finance fields should look into LinkedIn as an option. Professionals with little time tend to think of these sites as their one-stop shop for career advice and advancement. Want to cover all of your bases? Try cross-listing or including a link to your permanently hosted application of job listing directly to LinkedIn job feed or individual newsfeed. Be sure to make it public if the later to ensure the widest reach and the ability to share if a contact wants to pass the opportunity on to a friend. When All Else Fails, Consider the Personal ApproachOnline engagement is definitely an ever-increasing consideration for recruiting professionals. With the exception of certain rural positions, heavy labor, or seasonal work, most job seekers nowadays are online in some respect. This doesnt mean, however, that all know where to l ook or even that they should be looking for new job opportunities. In addition to your posting the job listing on multiple platforms and cross-posting for good measure, successful recruiters and hiring managers may need to make the initial outreach in order to put a perfect job listing in front of a qualified candidate. This doesnt mean necessarily resorting to cold calls or snail mail. Emails, direct messaging through social media platforms, and paid advertising to sponsor your listings are all viable options to help boost visibility and open up the initial dialog with a job seeker. As a final piece of advice, consider the individual needs and return of any given job before deciding how many company resources to invest in promotion. Budgetary concerns guide all aspects of business, and hiring isnt exempt. Tis the Season to Fine-Tune Your Resume

Tis the Season to Fine-Tune Your ResumeTis the Season to Fine-Tune Your ResumeTis the Season to Fine-Tune Your ResumeThe holiday season a great time to fine-tune your resume so youre ready to jump when the next job opportunity knocks. So, carve out a little time to examine what youre doing in your job search, and especially look at these four areas of your resume1)Professional Summary. Do you have one? Does it conveyaccurately and without exaggerationwhat you can do for the company? Is it aimed at the kind of work you want to do?To be sure, review a few job postings that sound like the opportunities youre targeting. Take note of the skills and qualifications the employers require and highlight those that are common to many of the postings. Which ones do you meet? More importantly, which ones do you exceed? For example, if theyre looking for someone who is proficient with a particular software application, are you beyond proficient, or an expert user?2)Experience. Be sure youre emphas izing accomplishments, not just listing your past duties. Showing how you helped an employer make money, save money, or make a process mora efficient can help you stand out over other candidates. What are the extraordinary things you did that made a difference in how your company, division, or department performed? Its important to emphasize those achievements to gain an edge. You just might need several edges to get an interview.3)Social Media Tie-In. Do you have a profile on LinkedIn or some other social networking site for professionals? If so, does the profile support and complement what your resume says about you? Consider putting your LinkedIn address on your resume alongside or right under your name and contact information.4)Spelling and Punctuation. Getting together with relatives or friends over the holidays? Ask one or more of them if they will proofread your resumejust in case you missed anything. (Social etiquette tip Dont ask them to do this during a holiday gathering Tw o or three days later should suffice, after the holiday hoopla has subsided a bit.)After you make these resume upgrades, youll be ready to renew your job searching efforts, answer job postings, take advantage of every networking opportunity, and sharpen your interviewing skills. Because the end of a year and the start of a new one are good times to look for work.

Carr - CEO/Founder - Purple Evolution, Inc. (PEVO) LinkedIn Alicia Carr in Apple WWDC16 promotional video - YouTube One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot mora to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Dema nd/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo-verstrker welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
